Introducing a very insightful Zen Cat of the Week! This cat has a big story to tell and I am honored to share it with you all!
Drum-roll as I introduce you to…
Pete, the blind cat
Name: Full Name: Sneaky Pete. When I first came to live here I had a habit of appearing where I was least expected. Nicknames: Buddy. Gram always says, “well, hey, Buddy!” whenever she sees me.
I’ll tell you more: I am a short-hair pure white cat. Although you can’t see them anymore, my eyes are blue. I do have a tail, however, the first family I lived with had me de-clawed.
Age: About 16 years old. I am experienced in life!
Favorite Food: Friskies Salmon Pate. They’ve tried other brands of salmon, but Friskies is my absolute fave. Never been too picky about dry food.
Favorite toy: When I could see, I liked to play with anything I could chase. Now that I’m blind, I like to play with anything string. They pull it across my paws so I can feel it. I will also chase fingers, if they are making a scratching sound on the carpet or couch. My cat sister and brother share Nip, on occasion. We’re all grown up cats, so we don’t play rough and tumble games anymore. We play very well in the cat box together. I always try to get along with them. Peace is better than conflict, I always say.
Favorite Cat Position: Right now my current spot of the month is Gram’s bed. It’s easy for me to find and warm to sleep on. But I love boxes – the smaller, the better – and sometimes I can find my way to the back of the couch. I love sitting in the window in the spring. They put a small trunk under the window so it would be easy for me to get in and out of. I used to love high places, but now I won’t climb any higher than I can feel up with my paws. I curl up when I sleep. Sometimes I fall asleep with my eyes open.
What makes you a unique cat? I guess that in spite of all the bad things that have happened to me I still am very loving and trusting.
Zen Thoughts: Accept Change. It happens. And you can make bad change good change if you learn new ways to do old things. And never give up. You only fail if you fail to try.
Un-Zen: I fell off the bookcase headboard in Gram’s room. I was feeling over confident that I could find my way down and missed the bed completely and hit the floor. When you can’t see, falling is very scary. However, I learned now that if I am up high and not sure how far down is, I meow as loud as I can and someone will come and help me.
Silly Friggin Kitty: Gram and Mom like to play video games together. One night while they were on the floor playing games, I bumped into Mom’s back. I stood up on my hind legs and whapped her on her shoulder five times in a row. Made her jump.
Anything else? I did write a book called Living Happy: Insights from a Blind Kitty by Peter W Cat. My local news came to my house to interview me for it. Mindy was very nice. I sat in Gram’s lap for most of the interview.
