Sipping on some eggnog can bring us delicious wisdom this holiday season. I will share that later.
For now, I have noticed that there is a new way of looking at the holidays. I hear that many people are not going cat-crazy when it comes to spending during the holiday. The commercialism and the over-abundant need for presents and more and more gifts are filling our draws and our closets but they are also emptying our pocketbooks and failing to fill that internal space within; the core of our being.
Rest assured, getting presents is not going to fill up your inner space of contentment. It is only temporary as the excitement will wear off quickly. Instead it needs spacious awareness, a little Zen essence and a realization that what is and what you have is enough.
In my situation, it took my extended family over 5 years to get the realization that all of this gift giving was over the top. It was expensive, shipping was expensive and above all, most of what we gave was un-necessary.
I asked these questions….
Can you tell me what you got for the holidays 2 years ago? Do you still use it now?
Can you tell me what you gave for the holidays 2 years ago? Are you still paying for it now?
The holiday season is about internal delight, magic found in the air; it’s the simple connection to those who are dear.
KT Cat Paws
You can love the holiday season without getting caught in its cat clenched teeth. People get stressed, but they also lighten their hearts a little more as they tend to be kinder, nicer and more reflective during the holiday season.
Who know, maybe it IS the eggnog!
- If you are going to give a gift, make it practical and useful and above all, do it from the heart. I had to release all my guilt for not giving at the holiday season. I would over spend and buy gifts that I assumed someone would like. I even purchased those “filler” fake gifts that get recycled. All for what? I now find a simpler joy in either purchasing a few small items of heart-worth, or I exchange giggles of laughter and love.
- Create a friend or family get together where you share a circle of thoughts, memories, and reflections. Give a little Zen Eggnog too!
There is a spirit of gratitude in the hearts of many this time of year
- Find a few reflections in the past. This is the time of connection to our ancestors. There is a simple delight in hearing the stories of the “way it was before.” A good way to understand this season from another perspective while connecting to the heart string of your roots.
- The holidays of course can be stressful. We have expectation place on us and we get busy. Give a wonderful free gift to yourself; the gift of patience and presence.
- There are many different beautiful stories, mythologies and interesting cultures that we can explore during this time of season. Expand your awareness toward something different and new. That will still give that feeling of “awe” and delight that you get from a “new” present. (Without costing you a paw or two!)
- Abundance is not what we have; it is about what we feel within. Connect to that feeling. It cost nothing to share a smile, a hug and a little purr.
- If you are going to give, give something that lasts a lifetime. Give the gift of Zen; presence of mind. You can also give to help to protect our plant, our individual cultures and our future.
So what about the eggnog?
- When you sip your eggnog, take a few moments to remember the special ingredients in eggnog and what they represent.
Eggnog is made of eggs (symbolizes life & eternity) sugar (sweet times), cream (a “rich” gift of dedication), spices such as; nutmeg (good fortune), cinnamon (love), vanilla (restoring energy) and sometimes chocolate ( mindfulness). Alcohol is optional but a little present moment Zen is not.
Lastly, the word eggnog means “egg inside a cup.” Essentially it is “life in a cup.”… so drink up!
Enjoy your eggnog!
Hugs, peace and purrs during this holiday season!
