I purr, therefore I am.
-KT Cat Paws
We have learned so much about cats and purrs. Now we can learn about the effects it has on our well-being.
Purring connects us to our own Inner Purr and Zen essence. It is within that purring power that we connect to our cats too.
It is true, not every cats purr. Cats who roar can’t purr and vice versa.
Although we are all “roaring” sassy cats, we need to remember this is about the power of cat purrs
How does a purr work?
The cat’s brain stimulated the laryngeal muscles in the neck to start vibrating or twitching at a fast rate. When the cat breathes in and out it causes the vocal cords to separate creating a purr. Cats purr when they inhale and exhale.
No one is really sure what starts the purr, and the cats are keeping quiet about this. They are thinking that either the cat can start it on their own, or the brain releases a chemical (endorphin) and the purring begins. For us, this is a mute (no purr intended) point.
Cats purr at a frequency of 25 hertz -150 hertz. Most cats purr at around 25 hertz. They found that the frequency in which a cat purrs is at the level of frequency that promotes healing of the bones, muscles and even wounds. Yes, I would rather get cat therapy then see the doctor any day!
Loud cat purrs at about 90-100 hertz… about the sound a truck idling or a power drill. At this frequency they can start to hurt the ears, so be careful.
Listen to two of the loudest domestic cat purrs.
This is Merlin.
This is Smokey.
Here is the “word” on cat purrs…
- Cats will purr to communicate with you as they know that you response to it with rubs and love. Purr equals love and food. Yea!
- They will purr to help with the healing process in their own body. It’s therapeutic sound waves. Cats who purr heal faster than those who don’t.
- The thought is cats purr to increase their own energy level after long periods of stagnation; napping like a kitty loaf for far too long! Purring can rejuvenate the cat body.
- Cats purr when they are content, happy and they purr when they are hurt, stress or sick. Purring releases endorphin which are natural pain killers. They say that they even purr in their last breath.
- Kittens purr when they are nursing.
Don’t think that purring is only for the cat…
- Purring is known to help us relieve stress. The low purr is soothing and calming to our mind which bring peace, contentment and Zen.
- The vibration of the purr can lower blood pressure and decrease heart rate. They have shown that those who have cats have a decreased chance of getting a heart attack or being stressed.
- This frequencies of purring can help us heal our bones, muscles and wounds too.
- Purrs is a great meditative tool. Sit with your cat and just listen.
- Purrs helps decrease anxiety and depression and it is great for overactive kids!
The best reason…. well, we just love cat purrs!
We feel their deep purr within and it connects us to our own inner purr.
Peace, Love and many years of cat purrs to come.
