“It is like a finger pointing out to the moon, don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory.” –Bruce Lee quotes
I vaguely understood that quote until one day, I tossed a cat toy down the hallway for my cat to play with. My cat started to run and stopped. He looked back to at me, and like an idiot, I pointed to the toy. “Over there, look!” He kept following my finger. Of course, at that point, I was the only one playing with the toy, as fetched and tossed it again. All while the cat was staring at me. I got the zen quote that minute. Since I fetched the toy, I kept it.
When Bruce Lee wrote that quote, he was using it as an analogy for martial arts. Not only was he a master at it, he had cat like grace and determination; he was also a very wise student of philosophy.
When it comes to learning about ways to open to spirituality, we tend to forget what is important to focus on. We get hung up on the how and why and forget the doing and just being. We start to wonder if we are doing it right, or if we know enough. We keep looking outside ourselves to other spiritual people to give us information. In doing so, we start to compare our progress to them, which can be detrimental to our spiritual growth. On our spiritual journey, we are the ones pointing at the moon, no one else. Our view is different from the person pointing to the moon standing right next to us, or half way around the world.
So how should we compare our experiences of actually seeing the moon?
- You are always going to find people who want you to stare at their finger and not the moon. These are the people who are probably pointing at themselves. Still a valuable lesson as you may actually get a small glimpse of the moon reflective in their eyes.
- Our fingers may be different, but the pointing is the same. If you look at the finger, you miss the point!
- If we stopped pointing at each other and actually look at the moon, we can see there is no comparison.
- Our experience is all we truly have. Share your unique moon view and allow others to form their own opinion. We can see a thousand different moon views by listening and sharing. No one is right or wrong.
- It doesn’t matter where you stand; your view is unique, just like your paw print.
So, stop looking at your finger pointing at the moon. Instead, go bask in the moonlight and enjoy your own experience!
