I was staring at my cat, and I noticed him starring back.
Maybe it’s because cat’s don’t have the ability to blink that it makes it look like they are peering into the depths of my soul.
I can tell you that it is rather disturbing, especially when my cat was close up like mine was.
So, here I sit with my cat starring at me, and all of a sudden 2 more come in the room and follow suit.
The creepy cat “group” stare begins.
They looked at me.
At each other.
Back at me again.
My first thought was my safety. Were they fed? Am I paranoid?
Sometimes this worries me a bit. They would have the ability to control me with those cute eyes, furry bellies and powerful paws.
After I got over the initial creepy stare, I realize my cat who started this was looking at me gently. I think he was trying to telepathically talk to me and tell me his story. Maybe it was a warning about the other cats, telling me to ‘run’ in a soft eye talking whisper. Yes, paranoia was still there…
Releasing my paranoia of a cat take over, I realized his look was spacious, and for a few moments I felt a connection.
This was only for a moment until I realized this was my cat; who is sneaky.
I did try to imagine his story as being a zen-master cat sent here to bring all-knowing wisdom to guide me along the way. Since this is not the Zen cat in the making, that thought only lasted a minute. I realized, there is no story here to be told, just the ‘want’ for food.
This was a food stare. How could I miss it?
Now that my senses have come back, I figure he is probably thinking “if I stare long enough she will feed me” or “what are those soft hairy things on her eye lids that keep moving up and down?”
I tried not to over-think and enjoy the moment before he paw tapped me on the nose to get moving.
So much for Zen…

I am watching you….
I realized this was an important Zen lesson
- Eyes really do heighten our awareness to our similarities. The presence of the soul is in our mist, even in our cats.
- Enjoy the simple moments and stay present. There is a sacredness in making eye contact. Nice to have someone look at you for a change despite their intentions.
- Notice the beauty of the cat’s eye, the multitude of colors, detail and shape. Besides the cat eyes being beautiful, it is unique in it’s ability.
- Never try to assume what someone, or the cat is saying with their eyes. You may get mesmerized and forget what you are thinking.
- To become friends with an unfamiliar cat, close your eyes slowly, then open them up slowly. This shows you are not threatening.
Disclaimer..doesn’t work with a lion.
…..Finally, don’t blink excessively at a cat who is staring at you. Your eye lashes become a play-target.
Yes, I finally got the hint.
Time to feed the cat.
