We wake up in the morning to find the toilet paper all over the floor, or in my case…the paper towels shredded everywhere. Well, what looked like paper towels.
I look over at the cute culprit who is looking back with wide eyes and a tipped head. Little furry paws standing proud! How friggin adorable. My heart opens up as I see in those eyes that say “Look mom, I killed it…for you.” At least that is think she is saying.
Either way, I fall in kitten love all over again. I pat my proud paper towel killer and clean up the mess.
I love my cats.
Cats will always do things to annoy us; scratch furniture. (see chair in photo?) destroy our door jams with scratches, ruin curtains, tear up bedding, pee where they are not supposed to. The list is endless.
Cats do things we don’t like, and sometimes it makes us love them even more.
We are determined to understand them; it is part of our make-up as a cat lover. How can we not want to know their ways! They live with us, share our private moments and we share theirs. We have a bond and we need to know what makes them tick. We spend a lot of money reading books, blogs, tapes, listen to Jackson Galaxy and or other cat behaviorist to understand their behaviors. We are the ultimate curious cat trying to learn about the ways of our best friends.
But why do we love them so?
- Cats are not known for unconditional love. That is a dog. A cat is independent, stubborn and sometimes aloof. To a cat person, we know this and it doesn’t matter. For a little form, they have such a big undeniable presence. It is what makes them so unique. We have a connection with them, and although we can’t always explain it, it is real.
The moments we have with our cats create memories, and these precious memories last a life time.
- These memories are priceless and we remember them fondly. We share stories about our cats, remembering the “time when.” We then become that person who shares pictures of her cat instead of her kids. Good times I say!
- The cats reminds us of ourselves; our own unique Cat Essence. Sometimes their vulnerability is a reflection of what we are afraid of too. We become protective; like a cat with a kitten. Many times our cat seems more in control over the household then we are! They look at us with an inquisitive eye, a power of perception that only they seem to have. They seem to know what is going on around here. Do we?
Sometimes they open up the silly cat within us.
- We get to be more cat-like when we have cats. I have been known to meow back to my cats and I bet you do too. We get to goggle over our furry cat as we speak silly cat talk. Let’s face it, when our cats cuddles, meow or purr at our heart, we tend to forget the 10% of irritation they may bring to our day. How can we not be content with 90% of awesomeness?
- Their silly and sometimes destructive ways can be an invitation to “wake” up. Reminds us of what is important. Not to focus on the little things, so we can learn to be more Zen, more present. Their short life is a reminder of the turning of time.
Before we know it we realize our kitten is now an older cat looking back with weary eyes; with so many years of love and laughter shared…it is priceless.
- A house is not a home without hearing the pitter-patter of kitten paws on the floor. The midnight meows and the gentle purr that wakes us up in the morning. Awww, how adorable.
- Now, if we are being real we know it’s more like a paw to the face at 5am, running across your chest at 2am and the smell of fresh cat poop in the morning that reminds us of our duty to attend to the litter box. Let’s not forget the reminder to get of bed now…. before they starve.
Betcha wouldn’t change any of it for the world. Right?
I wouldn’t.
